Language Learning Project

The search is on for the most innovative language learning projects in the UK with applications now being invited for next year’s prestigious European Language Label. The competition recognises and celebrates new ways to inspire and motivate language learners at all levels and schools, colleges, adult education, business and community projects are all invited to take part.

This year, the Europe-wide award highlighted all sorts of wonderful initiatives, from a primary schools project in Devon where pupils combined language learning with PE to a project where local businesses enabled pupils to use their language skills in a real-life business situation. This year’s focus for the awards is on languages that can be used in a career and on language learning in the community.

Kate Board, Chief Executive of CILT said: “Language learning is important to our future as global citizens and for the UK to be able to compete in the global economy. This award is a fantastic way of encouraging language learning and showing others how much fun it can be. I am continuously impressed by the exciting and innovative projects languages students come up with”.

To qualify for a European Language Label award, projects must provide an inspiration to others, be replicable, and involve any language other than English. Shortlisted projects will be visited by a panel of expert judges, who will compile a list of the ones they found most innovative and effective. Winners will attend a prize-giving ceremony in July at the new European Commission offices in London, where they will be able to display and share their projects.

Launch of Languages Work Pledge

Leading businessman Roland Rudd has launched a campaign calling on the business community to recognise the importance of language skills to the economy and employment.

The Languages Work Pledge is an online nationwide campaign being run by CILT, the National Centre for Languages. Businesses are being asked to sign up in order to highlight the benefits of language learning and encourage support for languages from businesses, education and the government.

Launching the Campaign, Roland Rudd, the founder of Finsbury, a leading global financial communications group, said:  ““British businesses will not remain competitive unless we can communicate effectively and interact with customers and partners around the world. The ability to speak a foreign language enriches us as individuals and brings huge commercial benefits to employers. We can not afford to be complacent, such skills are vital to the continued success of British business and the United Kingdom’s influence on the world stage.”

Research has shown that the UK is losing its place in the global marketplace due to its lack of language skills and that rebalancing the UK’s trade with non English speaking countries could add £21 billion per year to UK GDP1.  It’s also been shown that businesses that have an international communications strategy to help overcome language and cultural challenges achieve on average 45% more sales2.

Michelle Brassell, CILT’s Employment Engagement Adviser, said:  “Signing the Languages Work Pledge is a simple and practical way to ensure that the importance of languages and intercultural skills to business in the UK is kept at the forefront of the Government’s agenda”.

Comment faire traduire son site web efficacement ?

Traduire son site web efficacement

La traduction d’un site web est toujours un peu compliquée pour les responsables marketing. On nous demande régulièrement quel est le meilleur processus pour faire traduire son site internet. Si votre site web en anglais contient un grand nombre de pages, et que son contenu change régulièrement – comment gérer le budget de la traduction ?

Il existe beaucoup de manières efficaces de faire face à ce défi.

Utilisez un Système de Gestion de Contenus

Si vous n’avez pas de contraintes de budget, la méthode la plus efficace est d’utiliser un système de gestion de contenus. Choisissez-en un qui peut gérer plusieurs langues et supporter des mises à jour régulières. Rappelez-vous que vous n’avez pas besoin de tout traduire maintenant. Vous pouvez répartir votre budget sur une longue période. Ainsi, vous pouvez livrer un contenu adapté au marché sur une certaine période.

Ne traduisez que les pages principales

Vous pourriez traduire simplement les pages les plus importantes. Nous vous conseillons de demander à votre webmaster de passer en revue les pages les plus populaires de votre site, et faites-les traduire. Vous pourriez vous rendre compte que vos visiteurs sont concentrés sur une partie de votre site. Vous pourrez donc décider quelles pages sont les plus importantes, et faire traduire celles-ci en premier. Cela signifie que vous devrez revoir votre budget à la baisse en fonction de l’importance de votre page, et maximiser votre ROI.

Faites attention en regardant les résultats de cette analyse, car vous pourrez constater que votre page “News” est une des plus consultées de votre site. Cependant, ce type de page est mis à jour régulièrement, et certains ont beaucoup de contenu. Il n’est donc pas préférable de la faire traduire.

Les résultats de cette méthode sont que vous obtenez un site web dont le contenu principal est traduit, en maintenant un budget économique et efficace. Le seul inconvénient est que votre client pourra voir que de l’anglais se trouve encore dans le site. Vous devrez donc décider si c’est acceptable pour vos clients.

Développer un mini-site

Une alternative serait de développer un mini-site dans les langues souhaitées. Dans ce cas, ne sélectionnez que les pages les plus importantes selon votre analyse, et créez un nouveau site avec ce contenu seulement. Ce sera donc un site beaucoup plus petit, qui contiendra des liens provenant de votre site principal. Lorsqu’un utilisateur sélectionne une nouvelle langue, ils seront renvoyés sur le site de leur langue.

L’avantage de cette méthode est que le site web sera totalement traduit avec le contenu important. Vous aurez très peu de travail en gérant le mini-site, et l’avantage principal sera qu’il n’aura pas à être mis à jour trop souvent. C’est le meilleur rapport qualité-prix qu’on puisse trouver.

Traduisez une langue à la fois

On se trompe souvent sur le nombre de langues vers laquelle il faut traduire. D’un point de vue commercial, il est plus logique de faire traduire dans une seule langue à la fois, ou par groupes comme le français, l’allemand ou l’italien.

Lorsque vous lancez un nouveau site, il vous faut faire attention à plusieurs choses …

  1. Qu’il correspond au marché cible. Les caractères spéciaux fonctionnent-ils sur votre site ?
  2. Votre système interne peut-il supporter la communication/le feedback client ? Pourrez-vous gérer vos nouveaux clients français et allemands en même temps ?
  3. Le site web propose-t-il ce que vous attendiez ? Cherchiez-vous à recevoir des appels, des e-mails ou des demandes commerciales directes ?

Utiliser des drapeaux ?

Cette question est assez intéressante. On recommande généralement de ne pas utiliser de drapeaux pour représenter une langue sur un site web.

Langue : Lorsque le site est dans plusieurs langues, il est plus avisé de mettre du texte avec “français, allemand, anglais”. Pour indiquer la langue. Ainsi, quelqu’un choisissant la langue anglais depuis les Etats-Unis, le Royaume-Uni ou l’Irlande ne sélectionnent que l’anglais. Les drapeaux peuvent être assez sensibles au niveau politique. Par exemple,quelqu’un qui vient de la République d’Irlande peut ne pas être enchanté de devoir cliquer sur le drapeau du Royaume-Uni. Le lien écrit “Anglais” serait donc plus approprié.

Site selon les pays : Pour des sites webs spécifiques à certains pays, mettre des drapeaux ne pose pas de problèmes. Si vous avez des bureaux au Royaume-Uni et/ou aux Etats-Unis, il est donc tout à fait acceptable de mettre le drapeau américain pour indiquer vos bureaux des Etats-Unis, et le drapeau du Royaume-Uni pour votre site britannique.

À l’occasion de la journée de la libre entreprise qui se tenait hier au Guiness Enterprise Center, nous avons pu tenir dans nos mains un des tout premiers iPads d’Irlande !

Ce fut une rude journée, de 8h30 à 19h30, mais sûrement une des plus intéressantes à laquelle nous ayons assisté depuis bien longtemps. Un grand merci à tous les organisateurs.

L’intervenant principal était Jonathan Siegel, fondateur du cabinet-conseil ELC Technologies. ELC a conçu des applications très amusantes, comme FunnyOrDie, ESPN ou Nascar. Jonathan est vraiment passionné par le développement d’applications, et se montre très enthousiaste quant aux nouvelles opportunités de développement pour les fabricants de logiciels qui ont été amenées par l’iPhone et l’iPad.

Il a fait une démonstration de l’iPad et de quelques-unes de ses applications. Apple a déjà vendu plus d’un million d’iPads à travers le monde. La technologie iPhone possède déjà une base de 80 millions d’adeptes.

Nous avons discuté de la possible localisation de l’iPad, et de la traduction d’applications pour iPhone, et sur le fait que ceux-ci représentent le prochain défi pour la plate-forme.

Writing for your buyers, an analysis of Gobbledygook

An analysis of Gobbledygook

This article has been inspired by David Meerman Scott’s excellent book, The New Rules of Marketing and PR which we recently read, and strongly recommend.

Do the words scalable, world-class, robust, easy to use, flexible and next generation sound familiar to you? Have you ever gotten bored of these redundant and extremely standardized phrases? If so, it’s hardly surprising as these adjectives are likely to be found on most marketing websites nowadays.

David Meerman, with the help of Factivia (from Dow Jones), conducted an analysis on approximately 388,000 news releases in a nine-month period and found that over a fifth of them contained at least one of these words; the winner being ‘next generation’ which had been used 9,895 times!

Meerman used the term gobbledygook for these overused words. According to the OED, gobbledygook (or gobbledegook) is “language that is meaningless or is made unintelligible by excessive use of technical terms”.

How did we get to such poor writing?

To Meerman, it can be summed up in a few words: “marketers don’t understand buyers, the problems buyers face or how their product helps solve these problems. That’s where the gobbledygook happens.”

By not using a closer approach to the buyer, these companies deprive themselves of the opportunity to convince people that their product is the right thing to buy. Also, it doesn’t make any of them stand out from the crowd.

The phrases above denote the vocabulary used by a certain kind of business; but, the lesson is for all types of companies.

Avoid the insular jargon of your company and your industry. Instead, write for your buyers”, Meerman declared.

iPhone and iPad Localization for Apps

Yesterday we got our hands on one of the first iPads in Ireland at the Guinness Enterprise Centre’s Open Enterprise day for new software development start-ups.

It was a tough day — 08:30 to 19:30 — probably one of the most exciting events we’ve attended. Congratulations to all involved.

The keynote speaker was Jonathan Siegel, founder of the consultancy ELC Technologies. ELC build cool applications from FunnyOrDie to ESPN and Nascar. Jonathan showed a great passion for software application development and how the iPhone and iPad had broken the mould and opened up some very exciting development opportunities for software companies.

He demoed the new iPad and some of their applications. Apple have already sold over one million iPads worldwide. The iPhone technology currently has an installed user base of some 80 million users.

We discussed iPad Localization and iPhone app translation and how this was the next challenge for the platform.

With the help of a few iPads in the room, a brief overview of XCode and the iPhone SDK, we got a glimpse of how to build your first application.
