STAR Runner wins IBN Trophy at Düsseldorf Marathon

Congratulations to Dominick Branigan one of our sales team who recently won the IBN Business Network Trophy in the Düsseldorf Marathon.

Dominick is a keen running enthusiast. This is his 5th marathon in 16 months.

His winning time was 2:49 – a world class time by any standards.

Dominick took part in the Marathon as part of the Irish Business Network Exchange a business organization that promotes business between Ireland and Germany. The purpose and organization of this marathon are a little bit special, several companies were represented by teams of runners from Ireland businesses.  In these teams, there was one part relay and the other was single marathon runners only.

Dominick is the first person from Ireland to win this trophy. His time was world-class and he also finished 69th out of 4500 marathon runners in the Düsseldorf race. What motivated him to participate in this marathon was the willingness to improve his own timing and also the novelty of a new group of runners and running globally. He also took part in the Rotterdam marathon this year.

It was an amazing experience, no stress or pressure as I was running with like minded runners,  The last miles was a magical feeling full of emotion. Dominick

Congratulations Dominick from Star Translation!

Blog Awards Finalists

We’re delighted to announce our blog is a finalist in the blog awards Ireland 2012. Yippee! We’ve put a lot of hard work in this year and its great to see it being recognized. Check out the competition here:

What we find amazing is the quality of work by Irish bloggers. Blogging is now such a defacto-tool for all businesses (and non-businesses too). Everything from Gardening, busy mums,  keep fit, car maintenance etc. I’ve often asked myself – why do people spend so much time blogging? Is it for the money? I doubt it. Personally I blog for a couple of personal reasons.

1. Money. Yes – blogging for business is indirectly about money. You need to connect to your customers so they understand you and build a relationship with you, your brand and your company. All directly tied back to revenue. Ok so that’s the number 1, but its hard to make any direct money with a blog – its all about branding.

2. Fun. I actually find blogging fun. You get to experiment and share new ideas with people, test ideas on the web, and also share funny stories. Its a bit like a club that you don’t know all the members personally but you share some fun stuff together. The best part is that you can find people that share niche humor together.

3. Legacy. Finally for me its legacy. As I wander through the mid-life crisis (Yes, I am that old), you think about what happens in the future. Will my kids, family and friends ever want to look me up on the web and find out what “mad grandad” did? Well at least I’ve thought about them and am leaving them some digital crumbs to follow. They’ll see me doing Irish word of the day videos, read my blogs and see some other fun stuff. It will give them a few laughs in the future and a view of where they’ve come from.

Did you ever thinking blogging was so deep and serious?

Cheers

Damian Scattergood

How to create a social media policy : Enterprise Ireland Social Media Club

On Friday we attended Enterprise Ireland’s Social Media club #eismclub in EI’s Headquarters.

Captain Pat O'Connor and Damien Mulley discussing Social media policy.

Two fantastic presentations from Captain Pat O’Connor, Spokesperson & Media Relations, Irish Defence Forces and Damien Mulley of Mulley Communications on how to create, roll out and manage your social media presence. As you can imagine for the defence forces this would be a tricky and sensitive area. How do you allow people to blog/tweet and socialise whilst protection national security interests and peoples public/private interests. Captain O’Connor spoke excellently about how they manage this balance. They defence forces have a very well thought out policy and process for publication of information. His presentation was open and he shared a great many valuable lessons with everyone in the room.

Damien spoke about how to manage your presence and policy -and the key elements you need to have in place for a successful social presence.

1. Very important to remember is that in today’s world a Tweet carries the same weight as a Press Release. Captain O’Connor spoke about how some of the defence forces tweets had reached the news before the officical press releases – so you need to be careful how and about what you tweet.

2. So you need to have a Social Media Policy in place. A great site for lots of examples/templates for free social media policies is http://socialmediagovernance.com/policies.php

3. You should assign people as social media commentators and train them accordingly.

4. You should register your social media profile on all the various systems even if you don’t plan to use them. It can be an expensive and long process to get them back if someone cybersquats them.

5. Have an emergency response policy for social media. This is important to ensure you respond accordingly to manage situation. One company who had their database of clients “hacked” immediately sent out press releases about their “data breach”. This was picked up quickly by the search engines so discussions where about the “data breach” and not the “Hack”. This was a much softer message and a great PR win for them.

6. Finally ensure you tie your business strategy in with your social media strategy. Know your audience/customers, where they are (on what platforms), how they communicate and publish appropriate messages for them. Just like any offline marketing strategy you need to know the who, what, where and when of your messages.
