How do you create a good webpage?

WRITING FOR THE WEB.

A great question you ask and we got some great advice last week from Maryrose Lyons.

“Writing for the web” was the title of the presentation given as part of the Innovation Dublin Lunch time talk. With over 13 years’ experience in this field she gave us some really great advice.

Top 5 Tips

Maryrose covered the 5 main points on “how to write to be read online”.

• All about Me Me Me

• Make text scannable

• Make it skimmible

• Lovely Links

• Social network style

Ok so lets get down to business…

• All about Me Me Me

Your web page should be all about the client. Clients don’t want to read that you have the best technology in the world – they just want to solve their problems. So don’t sell drills, sell the perfect hole.

• Make text scannable

Your page should be easily scannable by the reader. Use graphics to show the key actions, such as

or

>Get a Quote Here!<

Make it easy for your clients to understand what you want them to do on each page.

It should have a clear headline – simple and to the point.

“Drill the perfect hole” instead of “The most cost effective drill, durable and great for getting the job done”

In others words, readers should be able to scan your webpage quickly when they arrive on it by using title, sub headings etc so they know what you do for them.

• Make it skimmible

Similarly, the text has to be skimmed. To help readers, use bold keywords and short words. Get to the point. Write 50% less text. For example, it’s better if you write “so” than “consequently”.

• Lovely Links

Make sure your links are clear and simple.

NEVER say “CLICK HERE”

It is better to have the link on the important keywords.

To read more about style download the presentation.

• Social network style

If you want people to share your content on social media remember text is short. Twitter is only 140 characters or less, so make sure your content can be shared in this space. Keep it short and simple.

How do you check your website ranking?

Alexa Website Ranking

A common topic we often discuss with clients is their website ranking. They come to us saying they are not getting traffic and are not sure about translation as how will the know if the translated site will get traffic as well?

STAR can help you with your international web traffic, but lets just look at English websites for now as its the perfect starting point. SEO and web ranking is a bit of a black art, there is magic and there is some science involved. However the average user can get some basic information themselves to gauge whats going on. One such free system is Alexa.Com.

Alexa.Com is own and managed by Amazon.com so you know they have a good reputation.  Its not 100% perfect so you have to take it with a pinch of salt as they say in English.

Alexa tracks users who use their system (free toolbar etc) to search the internet. So its a measure of how popular your site is within their users.

So the good side is, is that the system is consistent – you get consistent results from a portion of the internet users worldwide. For any good webmaster or SEO guru that is good enough for you to track whether your traffic is improving or not. You should track this every month and see how you are doing. It can take up to 90 days for some web changes to impact your SEO ranking.

Did you know it typically takes about 90 days for any major change to your website to appear on Google

To use the system you just go to the site rank page and enter your websites URL.

It will tell you roughly what keywords are being used to find your site, how many inbound links you have and your overall traffic ranking.

Next time we’ll discuss multilingual SEO and how STAR can help you deliver your website the right language to drive more business to your website.

50 Changes to Google Search Engine in March 2012

Published by Star Translation under Multilingual SEO

Google Search Engine Changes

In March Google made some 50 changes to the Google Search Engine – all positive and making an impact on our SEO work.

The changes include items such as:

  • Better indexing of profile pages. [launch codename "Prof-2"] This change improves the comprehensiveness of public profile pages in the Google index from more than two-hundred social sites.
  • High-quality sites algorithm data update and freshness improvements. [launch codename “mm”, project codename "Panda"] Like many of the changes Google make, aspects of the high-quality sites algorithm depend on processing that’s done offline and pushed. In the past month, Google has pushed updated data for “Panda,”
  • Live results for UEFA Champions League and KHL. Google have added live-updating snippets in search results for the KHL (Russian Hockey League) and UEFA Champions League, including scores and schedules. Now you can find live results from a variety of sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, NHL and others.
  • Tennis search feature. [launch codename "DoubleFault"] Google have introduced a new search feature to provide realtime tennis scores at the top of the search results page. Try [maria sharapova] or [sony ericsson open].
  • Fresher image predictions in all languages. [launch codename "imagine2", project codename "Suggest"] Google recently rolled out a change to surface more relevant image search predictions in autocomplete in English. This improvement extends the update to all languages.
  • Tweaks to handling of anchor text. [launch codename "PC"]. So this makes for better quality link scores.
  • Fewer undesired synonyms. [project codename "Synonyms"] When you search on Google, it often identifies other search terms that might have the same meaning as what you entered in the box (synonyms) and surface results for those terms as well when it might be helpful. This month they tweaked a classifier to prevent unhelpful synonyms from being introduced as content in the results set.
  • Better handling of queries with both navigational and local intent.
  • Better local results and sources in Google News.
  • Improvements to Image Search relevance.
  • Tweaks to language detection in autocomplete.

Google New Adwords Location Targeting Features

This week we’ve noticed that Google has changed the adwords location targeting features.

Some functions have been retired and a number of new ones added which are great.

Search suggestions: When you start to type a location term, Google will provide suggestions to help you quickly find your desired location.
Nearby locations: Nearby locations are locations that are nearby that you may also consider adding. Nearby locations can be added to or excluded from your campaigns.
Related locations: Related locations may be near the location that you’ve entered, have a similar name, or enclose a location that has a similar name. Related locations can be added to or excluded from your campaigns.
Enclosing locations: Enclosing locations are larger areas that contain the location that you’ve selected. You might consider adding this larger enclosing location if you want to reach a larger audience.

Google have provided a video introducing the new features to make it easy to implement them straight away.

Enterprise Irelands eMarketing Workshop on Web Internationalisation

Enterprise Ireland – eMarketing Workshop

Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin 20 / October 2011

Today we attended an excellent event on international web design, marketing and communication run by Enterprise Ireland in the Crown Plaza in Blanchardstown.

The opening address was by Jennifer Condon, Divisional Manager of EI who spoke about the importance of the web in driving Irelands future success.

Aileen O’Toole director of Amas spoke about the growth of the internet and ecommerce sales for Irish companies. Some facts included:

  • 72% of households access the internet at home, a very high penetration.
  • Your online presence will directly impact your offline sales.
  • 90% of people surveyed in Europe prefer to browse websites in thier local language – so translation is important.
  • Bad translation will lose you business and advised against using free tools like Google Translate.

Next up was Gareth Dunlop who gave an amazing presentation on how Content Is King!

Gareth Dunlop and Damian Scatttergood

Gareth Dunlop and Damian Scattergood discuss the advantages on good online content.

Gareth’s presentation style is very relaxed and direct to the point. Creating good content is important. He showed us an example of a stock photograph of a group of people used on 10 different websites. “Surely these people don’t work for all these companies” he said! Creating your own photo’s and content shows an honesty that comes across to your customers.

In the old days websites just had the basic’s – visitors to your site now demand content they can use – however as Gareth says…

Internet Simplicity if Very Difficult to achieve.

Ed Field meets Damian Scattergood

Ed Field CEO of Digino Marketing speaking to Damian Scattergood at Enterprise Irelands eMarketing Workshop.

Ed Field from Digino Marketing followed with the next step – communicating your message to your target audience. I found this very thought provoking. Ed had a slightly different spin on the classic USP. We all talk about Unique Selling Points and Elevator pitches, but at the end of the day Ed asks…

What are you brilliant at?

Its amazing how a simple question can show up answers. We all struggle to define what our USP’s are, but I can tell you instantly what we can brilliant at. “We are probably the best technical translators in the world.”  We are excellent at technical documents and technical marketing. Now how do I get that message across on our website and marketing material. Certainly its a lot easier than defining a USP statement.

When clients visit your website you have to get their attention in 6 seconds – and convince them in under 3 minutes. So there is no space on your website for fluffy text. People just want answers. When was the last time you visited an airline website to see what planes they have – never? You just want to buy a seat. Does this apply to your business?

Now – once you have all this sorted out on your website – can you now do it in 12 languages? That was John Coburns topic International Search Engine Marketing

Wow – it was an excellent morning, plenty of thought provoking ideas and work for us to do on our own export sales.

eCommerce Is it the right move for small business?

This month we have a guest article about eCommerce sales from our guest blogger Bob Curran of Buy4Now.ie.

Doing business internationally is always a challenge for companies, with language, technology and different buying behaviors globally. Bob is an expert in this field as over to Bob…

ECOMMERCE,  IS IT THE RIGHT MOVE FOR SMALL BUSINESS?

One of the biggest questions facing retailers today is whether or not to begin trading online with a transactional website.

Sure there are the usual arguments that your website is your most important calling card to prospective customers and a professional website inspires confidence in the consumer to do business with you, your website builds your brand, showcases your products, and is a more cost effective method of communicating with your customer base than traditional marketing.

Much talk has revolved around “ROBOS” (shoppers who Research Online but Buy Offline). All of these things are true but if you are still on the fence about the importance of Online shoppers and selling, these following hard facts are impossible to ignore:

According to the latest ComReg data newly published figures for the final quarter of 2009 show the total number of broadband subscribers at 1.44 million, a 20% increase year-on-year.  Mobile subscribers are the fastest-growing category, accounting for 467,000 subscribers, an increase of 51% on 2008 levels.

In 2009, the average internet user was online for 13.2 hours a week, compared with 10 hours a week the previous year.

So as internet connections increase, the home becomes the social and shopping hub as more and more people are time poor and internet rich.
Some other benefits to consider before you enter the eCommerce realm are:

E-Commerce Lowers Business Costs

Business on the Internet does not require bricks and mortar or staff around the world, just a Web site and perhaps one central warehouse or location to pick orders from.
E-Commerce Is Accessible Anywhere, Anytime.

The audience on the Internet is 24×7.  A business on-line is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Customers can shop at their convenience. The cash register is open all day and night, even while the business owner is sleeping.
E-Commerce Strengthens Customer Service and increases Customer loyalty.

A Web site allows a business to address its customers on a personal level.  How often do you learn all about a business upon entering a store? How often do you walk away with a free sample? A Web site allows businesses the opportunity to give customers information about their company while offering something of value.

For example, a company selling cooking utensils could offer the visitor recipes, a software company could provide interesting articles about the industry, a music store could offer sound bites of new music. By reading about the history and background of a company, the customer feels they have chatted with the owner. Personalizing a company creates customer loyalty. A Web site is soft sell. It gives the business an opportunity to market itself while gently leading the audience to purchase its products.

Case in point

Sheilas Flowers is a family run business whose headquarters are based in Bray, Co. Wicklow.    Nigel Banks is the MD of Sheilas and according to Nigel he realised early on the flower business was better suited to online sales his answer was to close the company’s high street shops and join the Buy4Now online family in 2002.

Some of the main challenges we faced were related to processing the orders, managing stock and getting orders ready for delivery, we quickly realised that another level of infrastructure was required to manage the online store and its orders  & proceeded rapidly to implement new IT systems .

“We were able to re-allocate existing staff to deal with the additional business and maintain the site to keep it fresh”.

“The current website which is hosted by Buy4Now Technology group,  is now fully integrated with our own in-house order processing software.”

Sheilas Flowers was a true trendsetter when in 1988 they became one of the 1st flower shops to have a website. For other retailers the question is still whether or not to trade online remains but the answer should in most cases be yes.

Footnote:
Sheilas are Ireland’s only florist to be awarded Interflora’s “Ireland’s “Florist of the Year” 7 times.  Sheilas  Flowers offer same day flower delivery personally through-out Dublin, Bray and North Wicklow and can send flowers  through Interflora to  practically anywhere in  the World .
