Cinema Revisits Old Irish Myths

As part of Seachtain Na Gaeilge, we’re looking at different aspects of Irish culture and Language.

Legends and myths are an important part of Irish culture. Understanding our legends and their origins is an important part of who we are as a people.

There has been a focus on Irish legends in the film industry, especially in British film. It has been reported that Michael Fassbender is developing a feature film about the legendary Celtic warrior, Cú Chulainn and plans to play the leading role. It’s an interesting mix of old legend and modern Irish cinema.

Interestingly, very few Irish legends have been adapted into movies. There are a number of really fantastic stories available to be made for the silver screen.

Hopefully things will change with the adaptation of Cú Chulainn into a movie. It is one of the most well-known Irish tales. The future movie, currently entitled Irish Myths, should focus on Cú Chulainn’s single-handed defence of Ulster against Queen Medb’s army (that’s pronounced Maeve).

The Irish-German actor [Fassbender] wants to play the lead role. He recently won an award for his performance in Shame and has already played in the mythological cinematographic adaptation of 300.

I can’t wait to see the adaption of this myth into a movie. Irish legends could really be inspirational for moviemakers.

The children of Lir would make a nice adaptation. It makes me think about the film Black Swan which was very successful. The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne is also a wonderful love story which could be adapted.

Irish myths and legends are sometimes considered as antique stories belonging to the past, but we should really be aware of the potential of Irish folklore to spread our culture and history to the world.

Which Irish myth do you consider to be the greatest?

Is féile idirnáisiúnta Ghaeilge í Seachtain na Gaeilge a ritear i mí an Mhárta gach bliain agus a chuireann úsáid na Gaeilge agus an chultúir Ghaelaigh chun cinn, anseo in Éirinn agus thar lear. Bhunaigh Conradh na Gaeilge an eagraíocht sa bhliain 1902. Tá an fhéile tar éis neart fuinnimh a bhailiú le blianta beaga anuas, agus tá sí anois ar an gceiliúradh is mó dár dteanga agus dár gcultúr dúchais a ritear in Éirinn gach bliain, ag sciobadh tíortha eile linn ar an mbealach. Tugann an fhéile deis go gach uile dhuine spraoi a bheith acu leis an nGaeilge, idir chainteoirí dúchais, fhoghlaimeoirí agus lucht an chúpla focal araon. Déanann eagraíochtaí, comhairlí áitiúla, scoileanna, leabharlanna, agus eagrais cheoil, spóirt agus chultúrtha a n-imeachtaí do Sheachtain na Gaeilge a chlárú leis an oifig agus beidh féile na bliana seo ar siúl ón 5ú to 17ú Márta 2012.

Dáil business to be conducted in Irish for Irish Language Week. This year during Irish Language Week, on 7th of March, the main business of the Dáil will be conducted in Irish. The Irish Times reported this weekend that Dáil Éireann will conduct business through Irish during the event to mark the occasion. It will be very interesting to see who will be able to converse correctly and if any real business will be done.

For the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, it should be an easy enough day for him. Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív will comfortably take the opportunity to talk about issues other than Gaeilge. But the pressing question is, who will answer for the technical group?. How many deputies can speak and discuss the tougher political agenda of the day in Irish?

The Irish Times bet on Joe Higgins… Who would you bet on?

The International CES Show took place in Las Vegas from 10th to 13th of January 2012. It is the largest technology event in the world and gathers manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, and technology delivery systems every year.

On the Irish front, one exhibitor in particular who caught our eye is WorldDesk Ltd. This Northern-Irish start-up specializes in the cloud computing and virtualisation software space. So impressive is their technology that they have reached an acquisition agreement with DeskStream Inc. a leading Californian and Indian company providing desktop virtualization software.

The acquisition of WorldDesk Ltd was announced on 12th of January. Employees of WorldDesk including co-founders Jonathan Chesney and Claire Moore will join DeskStream. The 2-year-old Irish company will still be located in Belfast. We wish them all the best.

Foras na Gaeilge Spend €6M, New Irish-English Dictionary

€6M on New Irish-English Dictionary

The Irish Examiner reported today that a major update to the new Irish-English dictionary is to be implemented this year.

This is good as there have been a lot of new words added in the last few years. It has also been nearly 50 years since the last major update.

New words to enter the dictionary are Idirlín (Internet), tvuít (a post on the social network Twitter; tweet) and mearscaipthe (an image, video, piece of information, etc. that is circulated rapidly and widely on the Internet; viral).

Based in Dublin, we provide Irish translation services to government departments and commercial companies. Find out more about us on the About page.
